~Chapter 16~

Brian walked into Sector 4 and saw Nick quietly playing with the Lego's again. He sighed to himself before making his presence known. The boy had been quiet and withdrawn ever since he had been left in the room with Dr. Richardson, and that had been almost three months ago. //He hurt you, I know it. He may not have meant to, but he did. He was probably too rough.// Brian shook his head as he entered the glass room. "Hey Nicky." He said as he sat down beside the boy, putting a small metal tray down on the floor.

Nick's eyes moved to look at the tray. He spotted the syringe and vials that had been laid out. His eyes moved to Brian, then back down at the tray.

"I need to take some blood, that's all." Brian explained, "You know that doesn't hurt." He smiled, trying to make Nick feel better.

"I don't care." Nick stated quietly as Brian took a hold of his arm.

//He sounds depressed.// The attendant realized as he wrapped a rubber band around Nick's upper arm. //Why would he be depressed?// Brian pondered on that thought while he carefully cleaned a spot over a vein, then gently punctured Nick's skin with the needle. He drew three vials then withdrew the needle, pressing a cotton ball over the small wound. Nick automatically held in there while Brian organized the tray and unwrapped a band aide. He placed the band aide over the cotton ball then ruffled Nick's hair.

"I'll be back in a little bit. I have to give this to Howie, okay?" Brian asked as he got up. He saw Nick give a slight nod, then go back to his Lego.

Brian left the glass room and looked back at the younger boy before he left Sector 4. //I'm sorry Nicky.//

***

"Hmm…" AJ stared at the map in concentration. He was lying on the floor of his room in Sector 3 with maps of the entire research centre spread out around him. "Ooh, this is the perfect exit." He smiled and circled a place on the map, then began to cackle like a mad scientist.

"I told you he was crazy." Brian's voice came from behind him, making AJ turn around. Both Brian and Howie stood in the doorway.

"Okay, so I owe you ten bucks. Put it on my tab." Howie waved him away as he came into the room, followed by Brian who closed the door.

AJ snorted, "I have to keep myself entertained somehow, no offence to you guys, but it's boring around here. Everyone's so stuck up." He rolled his eyes as he folded his maps up. "So, what's up?" He asked, packing them away in a drawer.

"Nicky's pregnant." Brian replied.

AJ stopped and turned around to look at the two. "You're kidding…you mean it really worked?" Brian nodded and AJ sighed, "I don't know whether to be happy or sad…I mean, we just defied nature but then again Nicky…" He shook his head and sat on the bed. He looked up then, "Have you told Kevin?" He asked.

Howie shook his head. "Not yet. We haven't been able to find him, in fact no one has. After he and Nicky…after that he just up and disappeared. Maybe he wasn't such a nice guy after all." He raised an eyebrow at the suggestion.

Everyone was silent but AJ spoke up, "No, he cares about Nick. We all know that. He's got a lot to think about anyway, and besides, he's in his room."

"What?" Brian looked at him, "You mean he's been in his room all this time and nobody's even checked there? How the hell did anyone get a license to practice science here?" He wondered to himself.

AJ chuckled. "I donno Bri, but you didn't either." He pointed out.

"Yeah, yeah…should we tell him now?" Brian wondered.

"No time like the present." Howie said and the three of them left the room.

***

Kevin sighed as he stared up at the dark ceiling. He had been playing the situation over and over in his head and still couldn't believe that he had actually had sex with the experiment. //No, he's not an experiment…he never was.// Kevin shook his head and his face- hardened. "And he never will be again." He vowed as someone knocked on his door.

Slowly, he got up to answer it to find Howie, AJ and Brian. "Can I help you?" Kevin asked, hoping they weren't angry with him for having to do that to their friend.

"Can we come in?" Brian asked softly, "We need to talk."

~Chapter 17~

"We need to talk." Brian said.

Kevin looked at their somber faces and nodded, "Yeah, come in." He said and turned on the lights as they walked into the room. "Is something wrong?" He wondered, beginning to worry a little. Had he hurt Nick in some way?

Brian sighed and looked at Howie. "It depends how you want to take the news." Howie explained.

"News?" Kevin questioned.

"How else can we say this?" AJ began then slapped Kevin on the shoulder. "Congratulations, you're a father." He said and Kevin went white.

"Nick's…?" He began and Brian nodded. Kevin's legs felt ready to give out so he sat down on the bed and put his head in his hands. The room was quiet for a while before finally Kevin moved again. "We have to get him out of here and we have to do it soon." He said, looking up at the others.

"Already been plannin' it." AJ smiled. "But don't worry about that, you should be with Nick." He said.

Brian suddenly drew in air. "That's why Nick's so depressed lately…" He shook his head, "Christ, I should have known." Everyone looked at him questioningly. "He hasn't seen you." Brian explained, looking at Kevin. "He has this attraction towards you but he doesn't know what it is, if he were out in the real world it would probably be a crush, but since he's never been told he doesn't know why he feels what he feels for you."

"Okay…I get that part, but why would that make him depressed?" Kevin wondered.

"You've never been around a pregnant woman, have you?" AJ raised an eyebrow.

"No." Kevin stated.

"Well, it could be a lot of things." Brian went on, ignoring AJ. "I think Nick knows he's pregnant, so his time is getting shorter. He hasn't been talkative at all and all he does is build things with his Lego. He hardly eats anymore and sleeping has become a hassle."

"He has nightmares." Kevin whispered suddenly.

"How would you know that?" Brian wondered.

"I'm in there at night, when he can't see me. I can't face him, not after what I did…we did." Kevin shook his head.

"You have to!" Brian insisted suddenly, "Don't you get it? You have to go see Nicky, he needs you." He said.

"Why would he need me when he has you?" Kevin questioned, looking at all three of them.

"Because." Brian smiled, then spoke softly. "Nicky's in love with you."

***

Nick sniffed and wiped a tear that was falling from his eye. He sat in the corner of his bed, between the regular wall and the glass wall with his knees bent in front of him. He held a book pretending to look at the pictures, but really just hiding.

He couldn't understand why he felt so sad. He didn't like this feeling and he wanted someone with him. Brian had promised to come back, but that had been at least three hours ago.

His stomach moved, making a growling sound. He placed a hand gently over it, wondering why it had been making noises suddenly. He wasn't hungry or anything.

As he pondered over the thought something began to build within Nick's stomach and it forced its way into his throat. Just as the others entered the room Nick threw the book to the side and ran into the bathroom, just making it.

At the sound of him being sick the others rushed into the room. Brian was the only one who entered the bathroom, the others wanting to give Nick some privacy for once. Brian got down on his knees and began to rub Nick's back gently as he threw up again. After a few minutes when nothing else happened Brian spoke up. "You okay Nicky?" He asked.

"I-I don't know." Nick mumbled shakily as he was handed toilet paper to wipe his mouth with. "Why am I throwing up Brian? I'm not sick…" He said as tears fell from his eyes, partly because of the burning in his throat and nose.

Brian flushed the toilet and pulled Nick into his arms. "It's called morning sickness kiddo. People get it usually in the mornings when they're…going to have a baby." Brian closed his eyes as Nick stopped moving for a few seconds then sat up so he could look Brian in the face.

"I'm going to have a baby?" Nick whispered.

Brian opened his eyes and nodded. He leaned his forehead against Nick's, ignoring the foul smell of Nick's breath. "We're going to get you out of here before you have to have the baby, okay? We're not going to let you be destroyed." Brian promised.

"We?" Nick sniffed miserably.

"Yeah Nicky. We." AJ came into the room, followed by Howie and finally Kevin.

Nick looked up at Kevin timidly. He figured that the doctor had been mad at him, the reason for his absence. "Hi." Nick finally whispered.

"Hey." Kevin smiled softly as he sat down. Slowly, Nick crawled away from Brian and stopped in front of the doctor, wondering if he would get into trouble or not. But before he could make a decision, Kevin's arms wrapped around him and he was pulled into an embrace, one he welcomed and fully returned.

~Chapter 18~

"You wished to see me sir?" Kevin stood in the door way to Hastings' office. Dr. Garret was already sitting in one of the two chairs situated in front of Hastings' desk.

"Yes I did. Please, have a seat Dr. Richardson." Hastings said as he motioned to the other chair.

Not knowing what to expect, but still being cautious, Kevin sat down and looked at the two men, wondering what they wanted.

"We need to talk to you about the experiment on Sector 4." Hastings because, clasping his fingers together and laying them on the desk in front of him.

"What about it?" Kevin wondered, suddenly worried that these two men weren't going to wait and see if the experiment worked until full term.

"Well," Garret spoke up, "Now that the experiment has worked, thus far, we need to secure a few things to make sure that nothing will effect the experiment in anyway."

"Could you stop calling him an experiment?" Kevin suddenly said.

Garret and Hastings glanced at each other then both looked back at Kevin. "We have noticed that you have gotten attached to the experiment on Sector 4. You were chosen to work here specifically because you were good and you never got attached. Unfortunately, now that you have become attached we no longer require your expertise for this experiment." The words made Kevin's heart sink.

"You're firing me?" He glared at the two doctors, noticing that they continued to call Nick an experiment.

"No, not at all." Dr. Hastings replied. "We are relocating you to another facility in Washington State. We have another experiment there that's just getting started and there are no living test subjects that are being tested on." Hastings explained, as if this was a good thing.

"And if I refuse to go?" Kevin questioned.

"We can't make you, but if you refuse to go there, then we no longer need you at all." Garret replied. "You can go back to Little Rock and continue with your work there." He said.

"So, what is your decision?" Hastings asked.

Kevin looked at him, then at Garret. He couldn't believe these two men. //I'm getting to close to Nick and if they heard what Howie and I were talking about then they know that I know who that kid really is. They want me out of here, that's all this is.// "I wish to go back to Little Rock." He finally said.

"Fine then, it was a pleasure working with you doctor." Hastings and Garret both stood up and shook Kevin's hand. "You have twenty four hours to pack."

***

//Twenty-four hours.// The words echoed through Kevin's mind as he made his way through Sector 2. They only had twenty-four hours to get Nick out of the centre and even less time to get him out of the state. Kevin sighed as he made his way up a flight of stairs to Sector 3.

//We can't go to Little Rock…once they find out that their experiment is missing that's the first place they'll look…we need to plan out this plan before anything… // Kevin entered Sector 4 and stopped. He silently watched the scene in front of him. Only months before he had scoffed at the affection. Brian and AJ both sat with Nick in the middle of the room and they were all colouring.

Kevin had never known anyone, let alone two men in their twenties to get down on the floor and colour, with crayons just to please someone. He had to smile at little at that thought, these two were nothing like the people he had met before.

A sound caught his attention and he looked away at the two attendants to the smaller blonde boy. Nick had laughed at something Brian had said, a sound that hadn't been heard for that past few months and a guilty feeling gnawed at Kevin's stomach, knowing it was his fault. The boy had gotten better over the last few days. Because Kevin had came in every day, he was talking again and wasn't as withdrawn anymore. Though he seemed depressed still, Howie had assured Brian that it was only because his hormones were disturbing the chemical balance in Nick's body.

Kevin sighed and the smile he had worn slowly disappeared, how was he going to tell them? How was he going to tell him?

Finally, he sucked in his breath and entered the glass room. AJ was just saying something that caused Nick to erupt in a fit of giggles, which in turn caused both Brian and AJ to laugh. Brian saw him and smiled, "Where were you?" He wondered.

"Hastings and Garret wanted to talk to me." Kevin replied as he sat down beside Nick.

"What about?" AJ wondered.

Kevin sighed, avoiding everyone's eyes, but there was one pair that seemed to burn into his own. He looked up into blue eyes and would forever regret doing so. So much fear was held in that gaze that Kevin had to force a lump that was forming in his throat. "I'm leaving in twenty-four hours." He whispered.

~Chapter 19~

“Why? What’d I do?” Nick asked as tears fell from his eyes. Kevin had practically just come back and now he was leaving again? Nick put down the crayon in his hand and hugged the stuffed panda bear that he had been holding in his lap.

“No,” Kevin said as he pulled Nick to him in a hug. “You didn’t do anything. Hastings and Garret just want to get rid of me because I’ve gotten attached to you. But when I leave, you’re coming with me.” Kevin said, wiping Nick’s tears away.

“How?” Nick mumbled, not so sure.

“We’ve been planning.” AJ grinned. “I finished the plan this morning, and in good timing too.” He brought out a map from his back pocket and unfolded it. “Here she be!” He said spreading it out in front of them, “Now, listen up.” He said then began to explain it.

***

Brian waited nervously, watching the clock. Finally, it struck 1:00 and he got up and went over to Nick who had finished changing into a pair of Brian’s old jeans and T-shirts. “Are you ready?” Brian asked quietly as Nick nodded and stood up from his bed, hugging his panda bear close. “Okay, come on.” Brian said taking Nick’s hand and leading him out of the glass room. Nick kept close to Brian, as it being his first time out of the horrid room. Brian smiled, “It’s okay Nicky, it’s just like being in there, only bigger. Now, we’ve gotta slide down this chute, okay?” Motioning to the laundry chute.

“Okay.” Nick whispered as Brian helped him to climb up and into the hole in the wall.

“Don’t be scared, AJ’s waiting for you down at the bottom, alright? And I promise that you’ll have a soft landing.” Brian said and pushed Nick down after he had nodded. Brian waited a few seconds before he climbed up and into the chute, then he waited a few minutes, not wanting to land on the other boy. Finally he sucked in a breath and let himself drop.

After a few seconds of darkness and air rushing passed his face Brian finally saw light and he landed in a bunch of sheets. Sitting up, he looked around and found AJ standing with Nick by the laundry van.

Brian climbed out of the cart and hurried over to the two. He stood in front of the smaller boy, not knowing what to say. He saw that Nick’s eyes had become glassy with unshed tears and he was avoiding eye contact. “I guess this is goodbye kiddo.” Brian said softly.

Nick looked up at him sharply, the fast move causing the tears to fall from his eyes. “Will I ever see you again?” He whispered, his bottom lip quivering.

Brian gently tucked a piece of Nick’s hair behind his ear. “Maybe Nicky. But not for a while. You’re going to go live with Kevin, he’s going to teach you everything you need to know and you’ll be able to have the baby with him. You’ll be a family.” Brian whispered the last part as he gently held the baby face between his hands and pressed his forehead against Nick’s.

“But you’re my family.” Nick choked as he wrapped his arms around Brian’s waist.

“I know baby, I know.” Brian muttered, his own tears surfacing. “I’m going to miss you.” He sniffed, kissing the top of Nick’s head. “We all are.” He said and they both turned to AJ.

“Howie says that he’s sorry he can’t be here to say goodbye.” AJ sniffed, trying to act like the tough guy he pretended to be, but he couldn’t help to not be touched. Nick sobbed as he flung himself at AJ, clinging to him tight. “I love you kiddo.” AJ said, holding Nick to him tightly.

“I love you too AJ.” Nick whispered into AJ’s shirt.

Finally, AJ was forced to push Nick away. He held him at arm length. “Time to go.” He said.

Nick looked down at the floor sadly, but nodded. He turned to Brian one last time. “I love you Brian. I’ll never forget you.” He sniffed.

“I love you too Nicky.” Brian whispered as Nick climbed into the back of the truck.

AJ wiped his eyes. “I’m going to put Kevin’s bags back here so you have to hide. Go right up to the wall and hide under a bunch of sheets, okay? And no sound or movement.” Nick nodded and climbed over the mountains of dirty sheets and bags filled with more dirty sheets. AJ closed the door when Nick was no longer in sight.

Brian and AJ looked at each other then nodded. AJ hopped into the truck and started it, leaving the small warehouse type building, leaving Brian to wipe his eyes.

***

“It’s been a pleasure working with you Dr. Richardson.” Hastings said as he shook Kevin’s hand again. “I hope you’re journey home is a safe one.” There was a gleam in the doctor’s eye and Kevin saw it but pretended not to notice.

“Yes, thank you for everything doctor.” //You stupid son of a bitch.// Kevin plastered that fake smile of his on his face.

“Mr. McLean here will drive you to the airport.” Dr. Garret pointed to AJ who stood leaning against the laundry truck. “He has to take the sheets to be cleaned and the airport is on the way. Here is your ticket…” Dr. Garret grinned as he handed Kevin the ticket.

“Thank you doctor.” Kevin nodded and grabbed his bag and headed over to AJ and the truck. The two of them got in and took off, without so much as a word. Both of them had figured that there had been a bug planted. They drove in silence until they came to the airport.

“Well, it was nice to get to know your better side Dr. Richardson.” AJ said with a wink as the two got out of the van and went around to the back. “Lemme get your bags here.”

“As well as you Mr. McLean.” Kevin smiled then watched as AJ opened the back of the truck. Kevin climbed in and pulled a sheet up, revealing the sleeping body underneath. “Well, at least he didn’t panic.” Kevin whispered to AJ as he picked Nick up and jumped down from the back of the van.

“Good luck.” AJ whispered as they passed each other and he closed the back of the truck.

~Chapter 20~

Nick yawned and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. Blinking the fuzziness away he looked around confused. There were lots of people around him and he was sitting in a really uncomfortable chair. Brian had warned him about lots of people, but Nick had never imagined so many in one place before! He noticed little people, smaller than him and then he noticed people who looked like Dr. Hastings and Garret, with really white hair and some of them were hunched over. As he was looking around at the people he noticed ones he'd never seen before. They usually wore their hair long and they had larger chests then the others, some larger than others. One of these strange people walked passed him pushing something that had a really small person in it. A baby.

//Wait…Brian mentioned them…women, the opposite of men.// Nick remembered and calmed when he saw Kevin coming toward him through the crowd.

Seeing that Nick was awake Kevin smiled. He sat down in an empty chair beside Nick. "What is this place?" Nick asked, looking around the large room and at all the people. He drew closer to Kevin, not used to being around so many people at the same time or being in such a large room.

"It's called an airport. It's a place where planes are loaded up with people and unloaded with people and they take you places that are far away. Now that you're awake we can get out of here." He said. "I just sold my ticket and we have enough to rent a car. Are you up to walking with me to a car lot? It's not far." Kevin promised as Nick nodded.

Together they stood and Kevin took Nick's hand, not caring what anyone else thought. He grabbed his bag with the other hand then led Nick through the crowd. Nick held his panda bear close to his chest as they pushed passed people. He could smell so many things and the room they were in was so big! And the noise! It was beginning to make Nick's head hurt.

Kevin weaved through the crowd until they came to a door. With that he led Nick outside and into a totally different world than what the blonde was used to. Having to blink against the brightness of the light bulb (which he knew was the sun) hanging in the sky Nick looked around in amazement. He recognized trees and everything that was in his books, but his attention was mostly caught on the sky. It was so big! He couldn't even see it all; it was as if it went on forever.

As they walked along Nick spotted the clouds and he wondered how soft they were to the touch. Suddenly a loud sound came out of no where and Nick felt his arm being pulled really hard. He fell back, expecting to hit the hard cement below, but instead landing in the arms of someone behind him. Nick looked up just in time to see a car rush by. He had forgotten about those, AJ had explained what the laundry van was and he had mentioned other kids of vehicles.

"Are you alright?" Kevin's voice was close to his ear.

Shaken, Nick nodded as Kevin finally let him go. "I'm sorry." He whispered, ashamed he had been so stupid.

"It's okay." Kevin assured him. "Just gotta be careful, okay?" He said and Nick nodded again, promising. "Good, we're almost there." He said and they crossed another street, this time at the right time and came to the car lot. Nick was fascinated with the red, white and blue triangle that flapped in the slight breeze that circled the car lot.

A fat man met them while they looked around. "Good afternoon sirs. What kind of car are you looking for today?" He asked, wiping the sweat from his forehead with a very used handkerchief.

"One that I can take out of state." Kevin replied.

"Ah, I see." The man looked around, "This one over here…" He walked over to another car, Kevin and Nick followed. After a few minutes of negotiation and information about the car and where the destination was Kevin handed the man the allotted amount of cash and the man handed Kevin the keys.

***

Hastings looked at Garret and they both smiled as the clock on the wall turned to 3:30. "Well, let's go check our experiment." Hastings said and the two of them left his office, heading to Sector 4.

Upon entering the room Hastings saw that nobody was in the main glass cage. The light was on in the bathroom so he figured that that was where the experiment was. He banged on the glass wall. "Hurry up and come out here!" He shouted, when no reply came he turned to Garret. The experiment had always come when called.

Together the two men entered the glass room and into the bathroom. "He's not here!" Hastings roared. "Where the hell could he be?" He yelled, furious.

"Richardson." Garret suddenly said and Hastings gasped.

"But the plane…"

***

Kevin looked over at his partner who was fast asleep in the passenger seat as he pulled into a roadside motel. It seemed that the soft noise of the engine and the motion of the car put Nick to sleep. It was getting late and Kevin was getting too tired to drive. Parking the car in front of the office he got out of the car and went inside the small building. A man sat at the desk, reading the early morning paper. Noticing that it was already five in the morning Kevin practically stumbled over to him.

"Welcome to West Lake. May I help you?" The man asked.

"I need a room, single bed is fine." Kevin yawned.

"Traveling all night?" The man asked as he checked the keys, finally grabbing one.

"Yep. Family emergency and I'm too broke to take a plane." Kevin explained.

"Well, it's probably a good thing that you drove. A plane leaving St. Petersburg exploded today at 3:30 this afternoon." The old man said handing Kevin the keys.

"What?" Kevin narrowed his eyebrows.

"It's right here." The man pointed to the paper. Kevin read the heading.

PETERSBURG FLIGHT 37 EXPLODED IN SKY

"Flight 37?" Kevin questioned out loud. //That was the flight I was supposed to be on!//

~Chapter 21~

"Come on kiddo." Kevin said as he carried Nick into the room. Carefully doing a balancing act, Kevin flipped on the lights without dropping the other body. He yawned as he placed Nick on the small bed situated at the side of the plain room. Nick mumbled something incoherent and rolled onto his side. "Hold on." Kevin sighed as he undid the jeans around Nick's waist and pulled them off his legs, hoping he'd sleep more comfortable.

Stripping down to his boxers Kevin pulled back the covers, pulling them out from under Nick's body, then he covered the boy up and turned on a lamp on the opposite side of the bed. Turning off the main lights he crawled into the other side by the lamp. He pulled his cell phone out of his bag and turned it on. Dialing a number he held the phone to his ear.

"Hello?" A hoarse voice answered.

"Mom?" Kevin asked.

There was silence, then, "Kevin! You're alive! Oh god, I was told your plane blew up and you were dead!" Ann Richardson began to cry again, as he had been since she had gotten the news.

Kevin sighed, "I'm alive Mom, but don't tell anyone, please." He said, knowing it was a strange request.

There was silence again; "Does this have anything to do with that research centre you were working at?" She asked, sniffing.

"Yes." Kevin leaned against the backboard behind him. "I'll explain everything when I get home, we're driving back to Idaho and we're still in Florida right now." He said.

"Driving…that gives me an idea of when you'll be home… Where are you sweetie?" She asked.

"I can't tell you Mom. I promise to explain everything once we get there." Kevin promised again.

"Kevin, you keep saying we…" Ann trailed off.

"I know." Kevin said. "I'll explain later. I'll talk to you later. I love you too. Bye." He said and hung up. Yawning again Kevin lay back under the covers. He turned onto his side, facing the sleeping boy. For a while he stared at the back of Nick's head, wondering if they'd make it to Idaho.

//As long as Hastings and Garret think I'm dead, then we should have nothing to worry about. They have had to already discovered that their experiment is gone and they probably figure I took him with me, so they'll have to think that he was killed too.// With that last thought, Kevin let himself fall asleep.

***

Brian sat down in the chair beside AJ. He played it cool on the outside but on the inside his heart was about to explode. He looked at Dr. Hastings and Garret who had called the three of them to his office. Howie sat calmly on the other side of AJ, annoyed that they had called him out of his Sector.

"Dr. Hastings, this won't take too long will it?" Brian asked softly, "Nick's still waiting for his breakfast." He explained, pretending that he didn't know that Nick was gone. //Far away I hope.// He thought.

Dr. Hastings looked at Brian; "The experiment is not waiting for his breakfast because the experiment is no longer there." He said harshly.

Brian's eyes went wide, //they found out so quickly.// "What'd you do?" He asked, figuring they'd expect him to ask that if he didn't know.

"We didn't do anything. The experiment is gone because Richardson took it with him. We were suspecting you three were in helping him."

"Hey, I was just driving the laundry van!" AJ shook his head. "I didn't get out of the truck the entire time. Kevin got his bags from the back and left. I didn't see anyone with him." He shook his head.

"I was in my Sector when he left, check the time on my reports if you don't believe me." Howie spoke.

Hastings turned back to Brian. "I was helping AJ pack for the second load of laundry." Brian replied.

"Well, it seems all three of you have been accounted for. It doesn't matter, the experiment is dead and there's nothing we can do about it. We know the drug works so we can now start testing its safety factor and then put it out in the market." Hastings waved them away.

"What do you mean dead?" Brian's eyes went even wider.

"Richardson's plane had an untimely…accident. If he had the experiment with him then both of them were killed because nobody survived the explosion." Garret shrugged.

Brian stood up; "Can I leave now?" He asked, his voice wavering.

"Yes, go." Hastings dismissed them.

Brian left the room. His entire body was numb and he hardly felt a hand on his shoulder until he had been pinned to the wall. "Calm down Brian." AJ was saying, knowing his friend was about to break down.

"How can I AJ?" Brian whispered as tears fell from his eyes. "Nick's dead…all of that for nothing and now he's dead."

I'm stuck on the beginning of chapter 31, (don't worry, I'm not looking for help, I'm just ranting.) and I don't know where to go from there! I know my objective and I know the way I WANT to get there, but WANTing is different from GETting. *sigh* It's just not working out :( Oh well, hope you enjoy this chapter.

And I would like to thank all the wonderful people for helping me on the confession thing, I got it now! *L*

~Chapter 22~

Kevin awoke when someone stepped on his leg. Moments later he could hear the sound of someone retching in the bathroom behind him. Slowly he sat up in time to see Nick come out of the bathroom and sit on the floor. Kevin got up and picked the shaking boy up, placing him on the bed. Nick looked up, his eyes begging Kevin to make it stop. Kevin sighed and ran his fingers through Nick's hair. "It'll eventually stop." He promised and the thought seemed to comfort the boy for the moment.

Kevin sighed and got dressed. Nick slowly pulled his jeans on and then sat back down on the bed. Kevin sat down beside him; "We can't draw attention to ourselves so we have to make up a story." He sighed, "And we use fake names. I figured that Brian would be a good name for you, is that okay?" Kevin asked as Nick nodded, grabbing and holding the stuffed panda bear that had been lying on the pillow he had used. "Good, now all I need to do is find a name." Kevin sighed.

"James." Nick spoke, Kevin looked at him. "It's…AJ's middle name." He explained.

"Good enough." Kevin nodded. "Now the story is that you are my brother and we're going home because of a family emergency. If anybody asks you why you just tell them its personal. And nobody can know that you're pregnant, okay?" Kevin asked. "If someone questions us about your throwing up we just tell them that you have the stomach flu, alright?"

"Okay." Nick nodded as his stomach growled.

Kevin looked at his watch; it was quarter passed one in the afternoon. "We'll eat lunch before we leave, they have a restaurant here and we'll pick up supplies from a gas station." Kevin said and the two of them left the room.

Once inside the main building Kevin went to the front desk to give the keys back. The same old man from before sat on his stool reading the paper still. "Did you rest well?" He asked.

"Yes, thank you." Kevin nodded, "May I ask if your restaurant is open now?" He asked, "My…brother and I want to get something to eat before we head out again." He explained.

"Oh yeah, Bertha's been in there cooking up a storm." The old man smiled. "Just go right on in." He said.

"Thanks." Kevin smiled.

"Your brother mentally retarded?" The old man asked.

Kevin turned around to find out where Nick had gone. He spotted him sitting beside a lit fireplace, looking at it curiously. He turned back to the man; "I don't like to think of him that way." He said, then remembering that everything was still new Kevin shook his head in amusement as he walked over to join him. "Find something interesting?" Kevin asked as he knelt down beside Nick.

"It's warm." Nick replied.

"It's fire." Kevin explained.

Nick nodded, "So this is what fire looks like? Brian read it from one of the books, but it didn't describe it very well." He said, looking into the flames.

"A lot of things are hard to describe with words." Kevin nodded in agreement. "Now, let's go get something to eat and get out of here." He said.

"Okay." Nick got up and followed Kevin into the restaurant. They sat down at an empty table and listened to the quiet voices around them from other tables. Kevin quietly explained what exactly this kind of table was used for when Nick asked if he was going to be tied down to it. Finally, a women, a little younger than the old man in the main room came up to their table and handed out menus to both of them.

"Good afternoon." She greeted. "You're the one who came in this morning aren't ya?" She asked, looking at Kevin, he nodded, "Well then, you two must be famished! What would you like?" She asked, holding out a pad of paper.

Kevin skimmed through the list of orders and glanced over at Nick who was pretending to. "I think we'll just have pancakes. That okay with you Brian?" Kevin asked, looking at Nick, hoping he remembered his name.

Nick looked up and smiled, "With strawberries?" He asked sheepishly.

Kevin looked up at…he glanced at the nametag, oh so this was Bertha. Bertha saw him looking and she grinned as she spotted the teddy bear under the boy's arm, "Anything for you sugar. Anything to drink?" Nick looked down at the menu. "It helps if it's turned this way honey." She said, taking the menu from Nick's hands and turning it around so it was no longer upside down.

Nick blushed, "Uh…thanks." He mumbled.

"Don't be embarrassed sugar, there's a lot of people who can't read." She grinned, "Now, we've got pop, apple juice, orange juice, plain milk and chocolate milk." She said, reading off the menu.

"Apple juice please?" Nick asked and she wrote it down, then looked at Kevin.

"I'll just have a black coffee." Kevin replied handing her his menu as she took Nick's as well.

"Be ready in a jiffy!" She grinned and left the table.

Nick looked at Kevin, "I'm sorry!" He whispered, scared that he'd be in trouble.

Kevin looked at him and smiled, "Don't worry about it. You didn't do anything wrong." Kevin reassured the boy. "Now, after we eat we'll get some supplies before we leave here." He said, "We'll have to stop often because of your stomach flu, I don't want you getting sick on me and harming yourself in any way." Kevin explained.

"Okay." Nick nodded, getting the stomach flu part. "You boys plannin' a trip?" Bertha came back and set down their food in front of them, then she placed Nick's drink on the table in front of him.

"Got a family emergency." Kevin explained.

Bertha nodded and left for a moment and returned with a steaming cup of coffee. She placed it in front of Kevin. "What kind of emergency?" She wondered.

"It's personal." Nick said softly and Kevin felt so proud he had to fight the urge to smile.

"Oh, one of those." She nodded, "There are plenty of those. I hope you boys have a safe journey and everything is alright when ya arrive." She smiled, then gave them the bill as well.

~Chapter 23~

Kevin picked up a bottle of Tylenol and finally went over to the cashier to pay for the stuff he had gathered from the small grocery store. Nick followed close behind him, holding his teddy bear fearfully. There were so many new smells and noises that he was nervous. He was so nervous that he hadn't noticed Kevin stop and Nick bumped into him. The boy looked up to see Kevin smile at him gently.

"Do you have to go to the bathroom?" Kevin whispered, figuring that he should go while they were stopped. Nick nodded and Kevin pointed behind them. "There's the bathroom, give me your bear and I'll wait for you out here."

"Kay." Nick said as he handed Kevin the bear then went over to the bathroom, closing the door.

Kevin turned back to the cashier. "He retarded?" The teenager asked, snapping a wad of gum.

"No." Kevin replied coldly as the girl totaled up the items.

"$20.64." She replied.

Kevin handed her $21. "Keep the change." He said as he put everything into three bags. By the time he was finished packing the items Nick was back. Kevin handed him the bag with the bread and bottles of water in it, taking the other bags filled with various items. "Let's go." He said as he handed Nick the bear.

Once in the car again Kevin sighed and leaned against his seat. He was angry, angry at that girl inside. He knew it was useless but he couldn't help himself. /She doesn't know anything about Nick, but she didn't have to be so harsh. Is he retarded, bah./ He thought to himself, unable to come up with a better explanation.

Sensing Kevin's irritation Nick gulped and sat back in his seat, thinking it was because of him. Slowly, and as quietly as he could he pulled his seatbelt on the way he'd been shown before. After a few moments of silence he looked back at Kevin. "Why are you mad?" He asked softly, slightly afraid that Kevin would yell or hit him.

Kevin jumped slightly, coming out of his thoughts. Upon seeing the fear in Nick's eyes he smiled warmly. "I'm not mad, at least not at you." He said reassuringly. "Let's say we get out of here? We should be in Atlanta a little after 7:00." He said, looking at his watch.

"Okay." Nick nodded, glad that Kevin wasn't mad at him. Kevin pulled away from the gas station and they began their journey again.

The ride was silent, but it was comfortable and every once in a while a smile would make its way onto Kevin's face as Nick noticed something he had never seen before. Finally, the boy decided to ask questions about the world he had become a part of.

"What are those?" He asked, pointing to the sky.

"Power lines."

"What do they do?"

"Supply power to cities. They're used to power lights, phones, televisions, anything electrical."

"What's a phone and television?"

"Well, a television is a…I'll just show you one. This is a cell phone." Kevin dug into his pocket and pulled out his cell.

"What does it do?" Kevin smiled, "With this I can talk to anyone I want." He explained.

"Really?" Nick seemed intrigued.

"Yep." Kevin nodded, putting his phone back.

Nick was quiet for a minute, then opened his mouth. "Do you think that…maybe one day, you'll be able to talk to Brian?" He wondered softly.

Kevin looked over at the boy only to find that Nick was looking down at his hands, which he held in his lap. "One day." Kevin agreed, knowing that Nick missed them.

Hell, he was even beginning to miss them.

~Chapter 24~

"What's that?" Nick asked, pointing to the sky again. Kevin had been so sure that the boy had fallen asleep that he jumped, causing the car to swerve slightly. Nick giggled as he leaned his head against his panda bear, which in turn was against the window.

Kevin turned to him and smirked, "You think that's funny do you?" He said. Nick's grin only got bigger. "What's what?" Kevin asked, remembering Nick's question.

"That." Nick pointed up.

Kevin had to lean forward to see whatever object Nick was pointing to. Up in the sky he saw a black shadow and he leaned back in his chair. "That's an eagle." He explained. "It's a big bird with sharp claws and a horrible screech. That's the sound it makes."

"Does it ever land?" Nick wondered looking up at the eagle.

"Eventually. Eagles usually nest in high places so when they lay eggs the baby birds are safe." Kevin explained.

"Eggs?" Nick was confused. "What are the eggs for? Breakfast?" He wondered.

Kevin laughed slightly. "No, birds are born in eggs, when they get old enough they peck their way through the egg shell."

Nick suddenly gasped and covered his mouth like he was going to be sick. "I've eaten eggs before! You mean I ate baby birds?" He whispered, his eyes tearing up.

"No." Kevin said gently. "The eggs you ate didn't have baby birds in them." He promised. "The eggs you had weren't fertilized, that means no baby bird would have come out of those eggs."

Nick looked relieved, "Good." He sighed and leaned back in his seat. They were silent again, then Nick's stomach decided to make its presence known. "Um…speaking of eggs…" He mumbled, looking at Kevin.

Kevin smiled, "Hungry?" He asked as Nick nodded. "Alright, there's a gas station coming up and we'll stop and make something to eat. Have you ever had a peanut butter sandwich?" He asked.

"No…" Nick said, not sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing.

"No?" Kevin seemed surprised, then smiled, "Well then, you're in for a treat." He said and the rest of the ride was quiet again.

***

"Ith thicking ta th' woof `f m' moth." Nick giggled as he chewed the gooey peanut butter sandwich Kevin had made for him.

Kevin laughed at the sound of Nick's giggle. "Yeah, peanut butter does that, it likes to stick right to the roof of your mouth in just the place where your tongue can't get it off." He said as he handed Nick a bottle of water. "Drink this, it'll help wash it down."

"Thankth." Nick took the bottle of water and opened it. They enjoyed the quietness as they sat almost in the middle of nowhere. The gas station was small and the only people there were an old couple and three of their grandchildren, but the grandchildren were way out in a field playing with an old black lab.

As Kevin watched, the three girls and the old dog ran over toward their car. "Hey Mister!" The oldest grinned a toothy grin at Kevin, then looked at Nick. "Come play with us!" She said as one of the other girls opened the car door and together the three of them pulled Nick out.

Nick looked back at Kevin, who smiled in amusement. "Have fun Brian." He nodded.

With that, Nick smiled and he let the girls drag him back to the field. Kevin smiled and shook his head as he pulled a map out of the glove compartment. Unfolding it he looked at the route they were on. Another three hours and they'd be in Atlanta. /I was hoping to make it to Nashville tonight, but I guess not. Unless I want to drive all night./ He sighed; /We'll go as far as we can go./

~Chapter 25~

"And then Rascal chased us to this big pile of um…what did Holly call it? Oh! Dirt and we found that there were these little animals living inside one of the holes." Nick explained excitedly as the two made their way to Atlanta. "Cassidy, the oldest said that they were gophers. Rascal went up to the hole and started to dig at it but Natasha stopped him because she didn't want him to hurt them. They had babies there." He said. "I asked if the babies came from eggs and Holly said that they didn't."

Kevin smiled as he listened. He had never heard the boy so enthusiastic before. /I guess it comes with freedom./ He thought as he continued to listen to the boy. "No, not all babies come from eggs. Natasha's the youngest right? The little girl with pigtails?" He asked.

Nick nodded, "Yeah, then Holly was the…girl in the light blue dress, she's Cassidy's and Natasha's cousin…whatever that is. But we had fun!" He grinned widely as he sat back in the seat. "They found it funny when I asked questions but Cassidy said something…um…she said I was cute, I don't know what that means, but by the way the other two acted I think it's good…is it good Kevin?" He asked, looking over at the older man.

Chuckling lightly Kevin nodded, "Yes Nick, it's good. She was right too." He spoke mostly to himself with the last part but Nick heard him.

"Oh…okay." He nodded, "If it's good, you're cute too Kevin." He smiled when Kevin looked at him and the doctor couldn't help but laugh out loud.

"I haven't been considered cute for a long time Nick. Thanks." He shook his head as he continued to drive.

"Why not?" Nick wondered. "What are you…considered then?"

"Well, I'm a little old to be called cute, usually cute is used for little kids, or people who look…um, well, for people who look younger than they really are. It's kind of hard to explain. If someone thought I was good looking, then I'd usually be called handsome."

Nick tried to grab onto the concept. He nodded slowly; "Okay…I think I get it. You're handsome then…but you're still cute to me!" He giggled, causing Kevin to laugh again. "Wait, does that mean I look younger than I am?" Nick wondered looking over at Kevin.

Kevin nodded, "You look about fifteen years old." He explained.

"How old am I?" Nick asked.

Kevin looked at him. "You don't know how old you are?" He asked, a little surprised.

"No." Nick shook his head, poking at his bear's nose with his finger. "Nobody told me…I've never thought about it." He shrugged lightly. "So, how old am I?" He asked.

"Eighteen years."

"How old is that?" Nick wondered. "And how old are you?"

"Eighteen is young." Kevin promised. "I'm twenty four years old. That's…kind of young."

"Hastings is old, right?" Nick suddenly asked. "I mean, he has almost no hair and his teeth are fake…at least that's what Brian said." He shrugged.

"Yes, both Hastings and Garret are old. Brian, Howie and AJ aren't old either, they're younger than I am." Kevin explained. "Well, at least Brian and AJ."

"How old are they?" Nick prompted.

"Well…um…" Kevin tried to remember back. "I think Brian's about twenty. AJ's probably about the same." He said. "Howie I think is about twenty six or twenty seven. He couldn't have gotten into his line of work if he were any younger."

"Oh, alright." Nick seemed satisfied for the moment and he went back to looking out the window, a smile on his face.

/He might be nineteen by now./ Kevin suddenly thought. /I was there for almost four months and who knows when he had turned eighteen./ "Nick, did Brian ever speak of a birthday?" He wondered.

Nick looked at him and looked confused, but then nodded. "Yeah, his birthday is the twentieth of the second month. AJ's is the ninth of the first month and Howie's is the…twenty second of the eighth month." He said, proud that he had remembered.

"What about your birthday?" Kevin wondered.

"Um…" Nick thought for a minute. "Twenty eighth of the first month. Why?" He wondered.

/He had practically just turned eighteen./ Kevin realized. "I was just curious. Talking about ages got me thinking about how old you really were because I didn't know when you're birthday was."

"What is today?" Nick asked.

Kevin looked at his watch. "July 12." He said, Nick looked confused but didn't say anything.

"When's your birthday?" The boy asked.

"October 3rd."

"Huh?" Nick looked confused again and Kevin couldn't figure out why. Then it hit him.

"The third day of the tenth month." He said. "And today is the twelfth of the seventh month."

"Oh, okay. Howie's birthday is coming soon then." Nick smiled and looked out the window again.
